Insulation is done to prevent corrosion of the outer surface of metal pipes due to environmental conditions such as water, soil, moisture, etc.

Primer is a resin of petroleum derivatives in the group of petrochemical products, which is used in the following cases:

Insulation under the work and greater adhesion of insulating materials to the desired surface and insulation of pipelines and industrial connections, especially in the field of oil and gas and petrochemical industries and manufacturing industries, including insulation on refinery process lines, pipeline transmission lines, petrochemical piping and steel and iron smelting facilities.

It should be mentioned that other uses of industrial and construction primers are such as rust removal or insulation of ventilation channels of textile factories, etc. Other uses of primer glue include the surfaces of pipes for concrete and metal bridge foundations, the foundations of metal and cement power towers, covering telecommunication and electricity cables for underground protection.

Types of primers:

All primers are single-component and are actually air-dry, and after being used on the surface, their solvent evaporates and acts as a single component, and it does not require the addition of composite materials for chemical reaction in order to stick.

There are two main types of paint primers. Oil-based primer and water-based primer, the main difference between both products is in the primer base.

Oil-based primers contain natural or synthetic oils in the primer coating to keep the paint flowing. On the other hand, water-based primers contain water, and the water-based primer coating evaporates and dries faster than the oil-based primer coating.

What is a water-based primer?

Water-based primer (latex primer) is a coating used to prepare surfaces before applying latex, acrylic or any other water-based paint.

As the name suggests, water-based primer uses water as a solvent. This means that the primer is easy to clean and you don’t need to use any solvents for it. Also, since the primer is water-based, the coating dries quickly.

Water-based primers can be re-coated in less than an hour. The water-based nature of Halal means that it can be used for both water-based and oil-based paints.

Water-based primer is typically used for areas that require prep work prior to painting. This is because water-based primers can be easily sanded or shaped to give the desired surface appearance. This type of primer has a low level of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which means less paint fumes.

Low levels of VOCs make water-based primers ideal for indoor use. Primer is commonly used to cover furniture, interior walls, and is also common for murals and artwork.

However, water-based primer has one drawback. This primer is not very good at sealing materials and therefore it is more suitable for non-porous materials.

What is an oil-based primer?

An oil-based primer is an undercoat that contains a high volume of oil. Oil-based primer is used to seal glossy or oil-based paints, block stains, and prevent paint shedding.

Oil-based paint is good for preventing stains because it has shellac-like ingredients in the coating, plus it’s naturally a very thick primer.

Oil-based primers are not common on surfaces that require prep work such as sanding. This is because the primer coating is usually hard and stiff when dry. As such, it will be very difficult to sand or shape it without damaging the primer coating.

However, oil-based primers have one drawback. Primer has a high volume of paint chemicals and VOCs, which lead to the emission of bad odors during use.

Oil vs water based paint primer

Color formula

Water-based primer is water-based. This means that the solvent in the primer coating is water, while oil-based primers use oil solvents such as linseed oil. The main reason that both primers have different properties is because of the base.

In addition, water-based primers have low levels of paint chemicals and VOCs. Most water-based primers are made from a solvent, paints (usually white or gray), and an adhesive.

On the other hand, oil-based primers contain other chemicals that are intended to block stains and improve the adhesion of the primer coating.

Drying time

Water-based primers dry quickly due to the nature of the primer. For the primer to dry, the solvent must evaporate.

Because water-based primers use water, the solvent evaporates quickly. On average, water-based primers can be recoated in 30 minutes and sealed with the final color within an hour.

Oil-based primers take longer to dry. This is because the primer uses oil as a solvent, and oil takes longer to evaporate and dry than water. On average, oil paints require at least 2 hours before sealing with the final paint.

Paint adhesion

In terms of paint adhesion, oil-based primers are better. However, in terms of material adhesion, water-based primers bond to several types of materials better than oil-based primers.

The type of paint used

As for the type of paint you can use as a primer, water-based primers are better. A water-based primer is more compatible or absorbent.

This means that any type of color can be used on the lining and it will have good adhesion. However, water-based primers do not work well with oil-based paints. Therefore, you must sand before use.

Oil-based primers are very sensitive when it comes to color types. Oil-based primers are most suitable as an undercoat for glazes, epoxies, and other types of oil-based paints.

Durability

The difference between water-based and oil-based primers is very clear in their longevity. Oil-based primers last longer than water-based primers. The main reason for this is that oil-based primers have additives that maintain the primer coating.

Also, oil-based primers are resistant to moisture and UV rays, which means that the primer is less susceptible to damage.

Water-based primers also last a long time, especially when sealed with a hard coat. But usually, due to the fact that the water-based primer contains less additives, the primer is not as durable as the oil-based primer.

Use outdoors or indoors

Water-based primers are suitable for interior and exterior surfaces. However, water-based primers are best used for furniture and interior walls. This is because the paint primer is not very durable. Also, water-based primer has low levels of chemicals and VOCs, so it’s safer and ideal for indoor use. You can also use water-based primer on exterior materials, but the primer coat must be sealed with a moisture- and UV-resistant top coat. Oil-based polyurethane would be a good choice.

For oil-based primers, it’s best to use outdoors due to high levels of chemicals and VOCs. If you’re using an oil-based primer indoors, be sure to do it outdoors, or you’ll increase the chance of paint fumes and VOCs. Oil-based primers are also more durable and weather-resistant, making them ideal for outdoor environments.

Clearing

Water-based primers are easier to clean than oil-based primers. In most cases, all you need to clean water-based primer is a clean cloth and warm water.

For stubborn stains, a little dish soap can do the trick. For oil-based primers, you will need a solvent such as turpentine or mineral spirits for cleaning.

Sealing and blocking

If the material is damaged by water, stains or oil, you should first prime the stains to seal the stains so that the finish color is not affected. Oil-based primers work better than water-based primers in this case.

Oil-based primers are more suitable for preventing stains and moisture due to the thicker nature of the coating and the chemicals in the formula.

Water-based primers seal stains very well because the primer coating is water-soluble and porous. In this way, the primer coating allows the paint and stain to disappear.

Primer texture

Oil-based primers have a harder texture when dry. The hard texture is obtained from the chemicals and binders in the primer coating. As a result of the hard texture, sanding is more difficult. It is also less likely to form a primer coating after drying.

Water-based primers have a flexible texture. The primer coating is not difficult due to the absence of chemicals in the primer. This way, it’s easier to sand or shape the undercoat before painting over it.

Use in wood

For wood, an oil primer is best, especially if the wood is porous. Oil-based primers are better at sealing the wood grain and preventing paint from being sucked into the wood.

Water-based primers are best suited for sealed or non-porous materials. Since the primer coat cannot bind the wood grain, it just penetrates, resulting in more coats of primer needed and longer drying times.

Here is a chart showing the difference between water and oil based primers:

Now that you know the difference between water and oil based primer, which one do you need? When should water-based primer be used?

In the following cases, you should use a water-based primer:

Painting an interior object

Water-based primer is ideal if you want to paint an interior wall, furniture, room or toy. Primer is safer due to low VOC level.

Using water-based or latex paint

Always use a water-based primer when using latex paint, acrylic paint, chalk, or any water-based paint.

Doing preparatory work

For construction areas or paint jobs where you’re remodeling, remodeling, or doing anything that requires prep work, use a water-based primer.

The veneer is easier to clean, sand, shape and even paint, thus making your job easier. With an oil-based primer, you’ll spend a lot of time doing prep work.

You should use an oil-based primer in the following cases:

You want to seal or block the stain

If the surface to be painted is flawed, stained, or damaged by moisture, you’ll need an oil-based stain remover primer to keep the stain and moisture in the finished paint. Water-based primers allow stains and moisture to pass through after a while.

You are dealing with an oil paint

If you are using an oil based paint, you must use an oil based primer. If you want to paint over an oil-based paint, you must also use an oil-based primer.

You want water resistance

Oil-based primers prevent the penetration of water or oil, so for surfaces that require water resistance, oil-based primers are ideal. Oil-based primers are also ideal for exterior use.

Conclusion

In general, oil-based and water-based primers are both great choices, but which one is best for you depends on your job and your taste. Remember, use a water-based primer for latex paint and interior surfaces. Oil-based primer is more suitable for glazed and exterior surfaces.
